Door entry system

Door entry systems are an increasingly popular security option, allowing safe and secure access to both domestic and commercial properties.

Door entry systems are excellent for regulating access to restricted areas within a home or a commercial premises, allowing entry to authorised people while denying entry to unauthorised people. In communal spaces, they have become the preferred option, replacing the traditional key access.

Types of door entry systems

There are many types of door entry systems available, each using a different method to allow access:

Keypad door entry systems

Keypad door entry systems require a code or password to allow access. The code or password must be keyed in manually. A central access control system verifies the authenticity of the code or password before access is given.

Biometric door entry systems

Biometric door entry systems offer maximum security by relying on physical and biological attributes to confirm identity before access. Common methods include retinal scans, fingerprints and handprints.

These systems tend to be more expensive than other options. They are best used in locations with low traffic.

Proximity readers

Proximity readers remain a very common type of door entry system. They are mostly used as commercial door entry systems. Users are given a keycard or tag which they can swipe to gain entry.

Their advantage is that the keycard or tag can be deactivated once the person is no longer authorised to access the premises.

Audio visual entry systems

Audio visual entry systems rely on audio or visual verification to allow entry. They are fitted with a buzzer, a speaker phone and an intercom system. The person requesting access will have their identity manually verified by someone inside the property before access is given.

Benefits of door entry systems

Door entry systems have several advantages over traditional key access systems:

Added security

Door entry systems allow control of who can enter a property. They remove the requirement to change locks or re-issue keys when they are stolen or lost. If the system relies on cards or tags, they can easily be deactivated if they become stolen or lost.

Increased lock control

Door entry systems remove the risk of doors being accidentally unlocked, as the system automatically locks all doors once they are closed. In case of fire or emergency they can be set to unlock for a predetermined period of time.

Customised access control

Access can be customised to allow all users to gain entry through the main entrance, but to only allow certain users access to restricted areas within the building. They can also place time controls for access to certain areas.

Lower insurance premiums

The higher levels of security provided by door entry systems will deter potential thieves, and consequently can attract lower insurance premiums.

Hard to duplicate

Traditional keys can be easily duplicated by unethical users to gain access without your knowledge. If a key is lost, you would need to replace the locks and issue new keys, which could be very expensive. With a door entry system, if a key is lost, all you need to do is change the codes and cancel access for any lost keycard.
