Keeping your home safe whilst away on holiday

With the summer break looming, it’s time to start preparing for this year’s summer holiday. You may have already booked something a long time ago, or you may be holding out for a last-minute deal. Perhaps driving off to a campsite is more your thing. Whichever way you choose to spend your summer holiday, the reality is that you will be away from home for at least a few days. How can you be sure your property is safe in your absence? Here are our top tips.
Maintain any regular schedules
If you have a gardener popping around once a week to mow your lawn and trim the hedges, don’t cancel. These are the things that burglars notice if they are monitoring homes.
However, if you have a regular milk or paper delivery put them on hold so that they are not piling up at your door – another giveaway that you’re not home. If you are away for longer than a few days and typically receive lots of mail, consider putting that on hold too. Alternatively, you can ask a friend of neighbour to make sure it isn’t obvious that it’s not being picked up.
Leave a key with someone you trust
Giving someone you know well and trust a spare key and asking them to stop by every couple of days will give you great peace of mind. They can sort out any forgotten deliveries, move the curtains and even water the plants. It makes the home look lived in and should deter potential burglars.
Lock up your valuables
Put any valuables in a locked safe. That way should someone break into your home in your absence they won’t be able to run off with them. Alternatively, find a spot where no one would think to look – such as a nondescript box in the pantry or in the bathroom cabinet. A safe is a much better option though so if you can afford it, add it to your list before heading off.
Don’t leave any spare keys lying around
It may be convenient, but it’s never a good idea. Thieves know that people hide spare keys and they know the usual spots where they are hidden. Give it to a trusted friend instead.
Get some outdoor lights installed
External lights close to your front and back doors, ideally ones triggered by movement sensors, are a great way to deter would-be burglars. They’re great to have all year round, particularly during the darker winter months, so well worth the investment now.
Don’t advertise your plans on social media
By all means, boast about where you’ve been and make all your friends jealous with photos of stunning sunsets and endless beaches after you get back. But don’t tell people where you’re going or when, or post while you’re away as it’s a giveaway that your home is left empty. And while you may think you have all your social media accounts on full lock down, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Install a burglar alarm
From bells-only alarms to ones that will allow you to monitor your home via remote live-video feed, there is something to suit every budget. Intruder alarms are great deterrents for potential thieves and well worth the investment.
