The nights are becoming lighter, which means we are all becoming more likely to spend our time out of doors. Leaving your home unoccupied (even if you are sitting in your back garden) is always a risk, but it’s especially a risk if your home security system is not up to scratch.

Those undesirable souls with nefarious intentions are always on the look out for unsecured, unoccupied homes during the warmer months where they can get in easily and quickly, and then out again just as quickly. Spring is the ideal time to perform a quick yet crucial review of your home security.

Here are a few things that you might like to consider:

  • If you have a home security alarm, is it in fully working condition, and do you use it every time you leave the house without fail?
  • Can your house keys or car keys be seen via one of your windows?
  • How easy would it be for a thief to break in and make off with your valuable items?
  • Have your most precious family photos been digitally recorded and saved in the cloud?
  • Have you gone around and recorded all the serial numbers from your expensive items of electrical equipment?

 

To keep your home completely secure, here are a few tips:

  • Ensure that all your locks – both window and door – meet the standards expected by your insurance company
  • Make sure that you keep all doors and windows locked at all times
  • Don’t leave your car keys or house keys somewhere where they can easily be seen by passers-by
  • If you are going out and won’t be returning until after dark, think about installing light timers, or leaving a light on.
  • Install external security lights that come on when someone is nearby. Thieves do not like to be lit up suddenly.
  • Use an ultraviolet marker pen to mark all your electrical equipment. Use your post code and house number so stolen items can be returned to you if recovered.
  • Keep an eye on laptops and mobile phones at all times. These are a favoured target of thieves.
  • Invest in a strong box to lock away your cash and valuable items when you are leaving your home unattended. Make sure it cannot be easily removed.
  • If you have a shed, keep it securely locked at all times. Keep all tools locked in the shed when not in use – thieves will use tools to break into your shed, and even your home.
  • If you do not have a home security system, seriously consider purchasing one.

 

Happily, most of us survive the warmer months without summoning the unwanted attention of thieves, and with a few thoughtful tactics, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of your home suffering a break in.
